Anfang Juni 2024 verbreitet sich die Neuigkeit wie ein Lauffeuer:
Virginie Viard hat Chanel verlassen.

Am späten Abend des 5. Juni gab es die offizielle Erklärung des Unternehmens, dass die ehemalige rechte Hand Lagerfelds nun nach fünf Jahren der kreativen Leitung und fast 30 Jahren Arbeit für die Marke nicht mehr Teil des Teams von Chanel sein wird.

Angaben zu Gründen der Trennung wurden nicht gemacht, was jedoch üblich ist. Es folgen Gründe bzw. Mutmaßungen, die zum Ausscheiden der Designerin geführt haben könnten. Zuvor wird jedoch die Geschichte des Hauses Chanel genau betrachtet.

Die Geschichte der Maison Chanel

• 1883 – Gabrielle Chanel wird im französischen Saumur am 19. August geboren.

• 1910 – CHANEL MODES heißt die erste Hutboutique von Coco Chanel, wie sie in der Zwischenzeit genannt wird. Die Hüte werden von einigen Schauspielerinnen des Landes getragen, wodurch der Name Chanel schnell an Bekanntheit gewinnt.

• 1913 – Die erste Boutique in Deauville wird eröffnet und bietet dort eine Sportbekleidungslinie aus Jersey an. Jersey war bis dato nur im Bereich der Herrenunterwäsche verwendet worden. Der Erfolg der Kollektion war groß. Nur zwei Jahre später eröffnet sie in Biarritz, in der Nähe zur spanischen Grenze, ihr erstes Couture-Haus. Es waren dort 300 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt.

• 1921 – Lancierung des ersten Chanel Parfums: N°5. Im Laufe der 1920er Jahre folgen noch weitere Lancierungen von Düften. Mit den ersten Puder- und Lippenstiftkollektionen im Jahr 1924 pflegt auch das Make-up Segment bei Chanel eine lange Tradition.

• 1931 – Hollywood was calling. Samuel Goldwyn, ein amerikanischer Produzent, lud Gabrielle Chanel ein die Kostüme für Tonight or Never (1931) und The Greeks Had a Word for Them (1932).

• 1932 – Es wird die erste Haute Joaillerie Kollektion vorgestellt: Bijoux de Diamants heißt die Kollektion. Die 45 Schmuckstücke wurden im Stadtpalais in der Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré 29 vorgestellt.

• 1939 – Der Zweite Weltkrieg zwingt Chanel zur Schließung des Couture-Hauses. Accessoires und Parfums wurden weiterhin in der Rue Cambon 31 verkauft.

Die Quelle für all diese Angaben ist die Unternehmenswebsite von Chanel. Leider wird die kritische Rolle der Person Gabrielle Chanel im Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht weiter beleuchtet.

• 1954 – Mit 71 Jahren wagt sie eine Neueröffnung ihres Couture-Hauses. Die Presse feiert das Comeback.

• 1956 – Im selben Jahrzehnt werden einige ikonische Designs des Hauses geschaffen. So wird das Tweedkostüm in die Kollektion aufgenommen. Außerdem kommt der zweifarbige Pump 1957 auf den Markt, der ebenfalls maßgeblich zum ikonischen Look der Marke beiträgt. In den 1960er Jahren wird Chanel von Persönlichkeiten wie Romy Schneider, Elizabeth Taylor oder Jackie Kennedy getragen.

• 1971 – Gabrielle Chanel stirbt am 10. Januar im Ritz.

• 1983 – Karl Lagerfeld übernimmt die kreative Leitung des Hauses Chanel. Es stellen sich sehr schnell große Erfolge ein – sowohl die Prêt-à-porter, als auch die Haute Couture Kollektionen.

• 1987 – Einführung der Chanel Horlogerie. Die Première Uhr leitet den Erfolg der Chanel Uhren ein.

• 1995 – Die Kampagnen von Chanel in den 1990er Jahren sind legendär und tragen maßgeblich zur Legendenbildung der Ära der Supermodels bei.

• 1997 – Nach zehn Jahren bei Chanel übernimmt Virginie Viard 1997 die Leitung des Haute Couture Studios, wo sie für die Stickereiabteilung zuständig war. 1999 übernimmt sie auch die Leitung des Prêt-à-porter Studios.

• 2002 – Die erste Métiers d’Art Kollektion wird in Paris präsentiert. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Prêt-à-porter Kollektion, die außerhalb des Kollektionkalenders gezeigt wird und das Savoir-faire (Know-How) der Maison Chanel würdigen soll. 2004 findet die erste Präsentation der Métiers d’Art Kollektion im Ausland, im Flagship-Store von in Ginza, Tokio statt.

• 2005 – Der Grand Palais in Paris ist heute die typische Location für Chanel, um die neue Prêt-à-porter Kollektion zu präsentieren. 2005 findet dort zum ersten Mal die Chanel Fashion Show statt.

• 2011 – Die Fondation Chanel wird gegründet. Das erklärte Ziel ist Projekte mit der Aufgabe die wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Lebensbedingungen von Frauen auf der ganzen Welt zu verbessern, zu unterstützen.

• 2019 – Karl Lagerfeld stirbt. Virginie Viard übernimmt die kreative Leitung des Hauses.

Gründe für Viards Ende bei Chanel

Hier kann man nicht genau sagen, welche Gründe zum Ausscheiden bzw. zum Verlassen Virginie Viards geführt haben. Dennoch gibt es einige Aspekte, die mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit eine Rolle gespielt haben könnten.

Zuerst sollte erwähnt werden, dass der Grund für die Entscheidung kein Rückgang des Umsatzes sein kann, da der Umsatz von Chanel von 11,1 Milliarden Dollar im Jahr 2018, kurz bevor sie das kreative Ruder übernahm, auf 19,7 Milliarden Dollar im Jahr 2023 anstieg. Es muss daher andere Gründe geben, die im Folgenden erklärt werden.

• Leena Nair als neuer CEO

In December 2021, the engineering graduate was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of Chanel. In the podcast with The Business of Fashion, she explained that she has a big vision that will bring about some changes. One change could be a new creative direction for the Maison.

• Die Wichtigkeit der Rolle des Creative Directors

Wie Olga Mitterfellner bereits in ihrem Buch Luxury Fashion Brand Management erörterte, spielt die Rolle des Kreativdirektors eine sehr präsente Rolle im Hause Chanel. So war es bereits zu Zeiten der Gründerin, Gabrielle Chanel, aber auch im Fall Lagerfeld. So war Karl Lagerfeld von 1964 an der Kreativdirektor des italienischen Modehauses Fendi. Jedoch stand er für seine Arbeit bei Chanel deutlich mehr im Rampenlicht, als es für die Arbeit bei Fendi der Fall war.

• Kritik an den Designs

Neben Sarah Burton bei Alexander McQueen oder Maria Grazia Chiuri bei Dior gehörte Virginie Viard zu den am häufigsten kritisierten Designerinnen der letzten Jahre. Chanel sei nicht modern genug und außerdem habe Viard die Handschrift Lagerfelds einfach nur kopiert und keine neue Ära des Modehauses eingeleitet.

Aus meiner Sicht hat Viard einen soliden Job gemacht und ein Teil der Kritik ist ebenfall auf gewisse patriachale Strukturen zurückzuführen, dass sich Frauen nicht so leicht in den Rollen behaupten wie es männliche Kollegen wie Olivier Rousteing, Jeremy Scott oder auch Alessandro Michele fällt. Dennoch sehe ich es ähnlich, dass eine besondere Handschrift von Virginie Viard fehlte. At the beginning of June 2024, the news spreads like wildfire:
Virginie Viard has left Chanel.

Late in the evening of June 5, the company officially announced that Lagerfeld’s former right-hand woman would no longer be part of the Chanel team after five years of creative direction and almost 30 years working for the brand.

No details of the reasons for the separation were given, although this is customary. The following are reasons or speculations that could have led to the designer’s departure. Before that, however, the history of the House of Chanel is examined in detail.

The history of the Maison Chanel

• 1883 – Gabrielle Chanel was born in Saumur, France, on August 19.

The source for all this information is Chanel’s corporate website. Unfortunately, the critical role of Gabrielle Chanel as a person during the Second World War is not discussed further.

Reasons for Viard’s end at Chanel

It is not possible to say exactly what reasons led to Virginie Viard’s resignation or departure. Nevertheless, some aspects could very probably have played a role.

First of all, it should be mentioned that the reason for the decision cannot be a decline in sales, as Chanel’s turnover rose from 11.1 billion dollars in 2018, shortly before she took over the creative helm, to 19.7 billion dollars in 2023. There must therefore be other reasons, which are explained below.

• The importance of the role of the creative director

As Olga Mitterfellner already discussed in her book Luxury Fashion Brand Management, the role of the creative director plays a very prominent role at Chanel. This was already the case at the time of the founder, Gabrielle Chanel, but also in the case of Lagerfeld. Karl Lagerfeld was the creative director of the Italian fashion house Fendi from 1964 onwards. However, he was much more in the limelight for his work at Chanel than he was for his work at Fendi.

• Criticism of the designs

Alongside Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen and Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior, Virginie Viard has been one of the most frequently criticized designers in recent years. Chanel was not modern enough and Viard had simply copied Lagerfeld’s signature and had not ushered in a new era for the fashion house.

In my view, Viard has done a solid job and part of the criticism is also due to certain patriarchal structures, that women do not assert themselves in roles as easily as male colleagues such as Olivier Rousteing, Jeremy Scott, or Alessandro Michele. In 2025, Matthieu Blazy will take over the creative direction of the house. He comes directly from Milan, where he has held the position of creative director at Bottega Veneta since 2021.
