Iris van Herpen x Musée des Arts décoratifs

Vom 29. November 2023 bis zum 28. April 2024 findet im Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris die Ausstellung Iris van Herpen. Sculpting the Senses statt. Als ehemaliger Praktikant des Labels Iris van Herpen konnte auch ich an der Ausstellung mit arbeiten und war hier in der Organisation der Meetings, der Erstellung des Zeitplans sowie der Anpassung der Moodboards zuständig.

Die Geschichte des niederländischen Unternehmens habe ich bereits in dem Artikel über mein Praktikum vorgestellt – Klickt hier um alles über meine Zeit in Amsterdam zu lesen.

Eine Auswahl von über 100 Haute Couture Looks aus sämtlichen Kollektionen steht im Dialog mit zeitgenössischen Kunstwerken von Künstlern wie Philip Beesley, dem Collectif Mé, Wim Delvoye, Kate MccGwire, Damien Jalet, Kohei Nawa, Casey Curran, Rogan Brown, Jacques Rougerie oder auch von Neri Oxman, Ren Ri, Ferruccio Laviani und Tomáš Libertíny. Zusätzlich sind in manchen Räumen Objekte aus dem Bereich der Naturwissenschaften wie beispielsweise Skelette oder Fossilien ausgestellt.

Als Pionierin in der Anwendung neuer Technologien in ihrem Fachgebiet überschreitet Iris van Herpen konventionelle Bekleidungsnormen und setzt dabei sowohl auf traditionelles Couture Know-How, als auch auf innovative und unkonventionelle Techniken.

Die Ausstellung wird von Cloé Pitiot und der stellvertretenden Kuratorin Louise Curtis kuratiert. Mit der Szenografie wurde das Studio Nathalie Crinière beauftragt. Das Museum beschreibt sich und seine Vision wie folgt:

„Les Arts Décoratifs ist eine staatlich anerkannte private Organisation ohne Erwerbszweck, die 1882 in Folge der Weltausstellungen gegründet wurde, als sich eine Gruppe von Sammlern mit der Idee zusammenschloss, die angewandten Künste zu fördern und Verbindungen zwischen Industrie und Kultur, Design und Produktion herzustellen.“

Die Ausstellung war in elf Themen unterteilt, die im Folgenden dargestellt werden. Hier besteht jedoch kein Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit und enthält die Highlights des jeweiligen Themas. Der Fokus liegt hier auf der Mode Iris van Herpens, jedoch war die ergänzende Kunst ebenfalls oft ein Highlight und ist daher ebenfalls Teil der Highlights. Darunter werden jeweils der Künstler, die Kollektion und das entsprechende Jahr erwähnt.

Die Ausstellung beginnt mit der Thematisierung des Wassers in jeglicher Form, bis man bei der Anatomie des Menschen ankommt. Neben den Knochen, dem Nervensystem und den Blutbahnen ist die Inspiration durch die Natur und insbesondere durch Fossilien und das weitreichende unterirdische Netzwerk von Pilzen omnipräsent. Nach den Räumen sieben und acht, wo die Arbeit und Prozesse im Atelier thematisiert werden, nimmt die Ausstellung eine abstrakte Wendung. In düsteren Looks wird das Thema der Angst und der Furcht durch bspw. Schlangenmotive behandelt. In den letzten beiden Themenblöcken geht es um die Zukunftsvision der Designerin für unsere Welt. Es ist die Rede von einer „neuen“ Natur und führt schließlich zur abstrakten Thematik des Kosmos. Gegensätzlich werden hier blumige Silhouetten und Farben in dieser Umgebung platziert, wodurch die futuristische Denkweise der Designerin präsentiert wird.

Verschafft euch gerne einen Überblick durch die folgenden Bilder. Selbstverständlich können diese Bilder und meine subjektiven Schilderungen einen Besuch im Museum nicht ersetzen.

Ich bin sehr dankbar Teil dieser Ausstellung sein zu dürfen. Den Besuch gemeinsam mit Margaux zu erleben, hätte ich mir besser nicht vorstellen können. Gemeinsam absolvierten wir das Praktikum in Amsterdam und nun konnten wir gemeinsam unsere Arbeit begutachten.

Iris van Herpen x Musée des Arts décoratifs

From November 29, 2023, to April 28, 2024, the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris will host the exhibition Iris van Herpen. Sculpting the Senses takes place. As a former intern at the Iris van Herpen label, I was also able to work on the exhibition and was responsible for organizing the meetings, creating the schedule, and adapting the mood boards.

A selection of over 100 haute couture looks from all the collections is juxtaposed with contemporary works of art by artists such as Philip Beesley, the Collectif Mé, Wim Delvoye, Kate MccGwire, Damien Jalet, Kohei Nawa, Casey Curran, Rogan Brown, Jacques Rougerie and also by Neri Oxman, Ren Ri, Ferruccio Laviani and Tomáš Libertíny. In addition, objects from the natural sciences, such as skeletons or fossils, are exhibited in some rooms.

As a pioneer in the application of new technologies in her field, Iris van Herpen transcends conventional clothing norms and relies on both traditional couture know-how and innovative and unconventional techniques.

The exhibition is curated by Cloé Pitiot and deputy curator Louise Curtis. Studio Nathalie Crinière was commissioned with the scenography.The museum describes itself and its vision as follows:

„Les Arts Décoratifs is a state-approved not-for profit private organization founded in 1882, in the wake of the Universal Exhibitions, when a group of collectors banded together with the idea of promoting the applied arts and developing links between industry and culture, design, and production.“

The exhibition was divided into eleven themes, which are presented below. However, this is not intended to be exhaustive and only contains the highlights of each theme. The focus here is on Iris van Herpen’s fashion, but the complementary art was also often a highlight, and is therefore also part of the following highlights. The artist, the collection, and the corresponding year are mentioned below.

The exhibition begins with the theme of water in all its forms, before moving on to the human anatomy. In addition to bones, the nervous system, and blood vessels, inspiration from nature and in particular fossils and the extensive underground network of fungi is omnipresent. After rooms seven and eight, which focus on the work and processes in the studio, the exhibition takes an abstract turn. The theme of fear is dealt with in gloomy looks using, for example, snake motifs. The last two thematic blocks deal with the designer’s vision of the future of our world. There is talk of a „new“ nature which finally leads to the abstract theme of the cosmos. Contrasting floral silhouettes and colors are placed in this environment, presenting the designer’s futuristic way of thinking.
