Defintion
Haute couture, literally translated as “high sewing,” refers to the bespoke creation of one-of-a-kind collections crafted from the finest materials – the ultimate expression of exclusivity, creativity, and masterful craftsmanship. But haute couture is more than just a term: it is a legally protected designation that, since 1945, can only be used by fashion houses that meet the strict criteria set by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM).

The FHCM, originally founded in 1868 as the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture and operating under its current name since 2017, is the institution that defines and enforces the rules and standards of haute couture worldwide.
A fashion house wishing to bear the title haute couture must meet the following criteria:
- Garments must be custom-made in an atelier employing at least 15 full-time staff members and 20 full-time technical workers.
- Fashion houses must present two collections per year (Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter), each featuring at least 50 original looks, encompassing both daywear and eveningwear.
- Houses may first be invited as guest members; those who participate for four consecutive seasons may be granted full membership.
These rules are strict, but they are not meant to standardize – rather, they exist to foster innovation and creativity.
On FABILEUX, we report on the latest shows held twice a year in Paris: in January for the Spring/Summer collections and in July for the Fall/Winter collections.
This coverage is complemented by visits to exhibitions by leading haute couture designers – a valuable source of inspiration and insight.
I’ve also written an article about my experience at a haute couture label during my internship at Iris van Herpen in Amsterdam: click here to read it.
